Exertional Rhabdomyolysis
Exertional Rhabdomyolysis (ER) is a condition in horses resulting in muscle twitching and cramping, typically revolving around sessions of training or physical exertion. (download pdf)
Easy Keepers
Overweight horses are often challenging since they must be limited in the amounts they are fed each day because they gain weight so easily.  Overweight horses are susceptible to digestive upset due to complications with digestion, absorption or utilization of starch and sugars.  In addition, these horses are sometimes affected by other metabolic conditions such as Insulin Resistance or Cushing’s Syndrome. (download pdf)
Kidney Failure/Dysfunction
Kidney failure/dysfunction in horses is not a common condition but, when it does occur, nutritional adjustments must be made. The diet needs to be built to limit the need to filter excessive nutrients, but still supply the essential nutritional needs of the horse to be healthy in their daily lives. (download pdf)
PSSM/EPSM Horses
Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (or Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy) is a genetic condition in horses affecting normal glucose and glycogen metabolism.  Clinical symptoms include muscle soreness of the hindquarter or back, stiffness, tying up and muscle atrophy. (download pdf)
Laminitic Horses
Laminitis, an inflammation of the laminae of the foot, is a common condition resulting from a number of internal and external causes.  Conditions associated with laminitis include colic, diarrhea, pneumonia, metritis from retained placenta, endocrine conditions like Cushings and Insulin Resistance and Equine Metabolic Syndrome and musculoskeletal problems resulting in altered loading of the supporting limb. Horses with Muscle Loss
Unlike many other conditions found is horses, muscle loss or atrophy is predominantly controlled through diet.  Muscle loss/atrophy can be cause by many things, including poor diet, neuromuscular conditions or advancing age. (download pdf)
Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic Syndrome is a condition in horses with abnormal amounts and locations of adipose tissue.  Horses with Metabolic Syndrome also tend to have other symptoms, such as Insulin Resistance. (download pdf)
Insulin Resistance
Insulin Resistance (IR) is a symptom of horses suffering from various conditions, including Cushing’s Syndrome, Metabolic Syndrome and other Grain Associated Disorders.  Horses with Insulin Resistance require a higher than normal level of circulating insulin to maintain normal or near normal circulating blood glucose levels.  Evidence indicates IR predisposes horses and ponies to laminitis. (download pdf)
HYPP
Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP) is a genetic condition affecting the transport of ions across cellular membranes.  Clinic symptoms include third eye-lid prolapse, increased respirations, muscle twitching and tying up, especially affecting the muscle of the hindquarters causing “dog-sitting”. (download pdf)
Cushing’s
Equine Cushing’s Syndrome is a complex condition involving hyperplasia or adenoma of the anterior pituitary gland, resulting in many biochemical alterations within the body. These symptoms are far reaching and include hirsutism with no hair loss during the summer, laminitis, weight problems (either overweight or underweight), lowered immunity to parasites or infections, decreased intestinal wall integrity and infertility. (download pdf)
