The
horse career of Kelly started at a young age with her grandfathers’
Morgan and Arabian show horses. She spent several summers in Arizona at
her grandfathers’ small ranch and lived there with her mother and sister
while her father was sent overseas by his company to upstart their
European office. After moving with the rest of the family to South
Wales, United Kingdom, Kelly, at the ripe old age of 2 ½, started riding
and jumping welsh ponies. This only helped to strengthen her already
hardy love of horses. Once returning to the states, Kelly started
showing registered Paint Horses. She and her first youth gelding
competed in all around competition, earning numerous Register of Merit
awards along with a Youth Championship and Youth Versatility award. One
of the highlights of their career together, was to achieve the goal of
finishing 17th in the nation on the APHA National Youth Top
20 Honor Roll.
Today, Kelly spends her time on
her Iowa farm with her husband Larry and their 3 young children Grayce
(4 ½), Grayden (2 ½) and Gavyn (1). Several thoroughbred broodmares
keep her busy raising Hunt Seat prospects, while her husband
concentrates on the “real” farm and in raising corn, beans and of course
hay! She hopes at some point to be able to start riding more again, but
work, family and her small breeding operation keep her quite busy for
the moment.
Kelly attended the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln where she attained a Bachelor of Science degree in
Animal Science specializing in Equine Nutrition and Reproductive
Physiology. Kelly had been accepted to equine graduate study programs
at Colorado State University and the University of Missouri where she
planned to continue her equine education. Prior to starting her
graduate studies and upon recommendation by her nutrition professor, she
interviewed and accepted a position working for Tom Trotter, Progressive
Nutrition’s General Manager, as an Equine Nutrition Consultant.
Although the plan was for work experience prior to graduate school, life
sometimes doesn’t follow the plan, thus Kelly has been consulting with
horse owners, veterinarians and feed dealers for over 12 years now. In
that time, Kelly has given hundreds of Nutrition Seminars to end users
as well as veterinarians and vet students. In addition, she has
authored numerous articles for local and regional publications. In
1998, Kelly passed her exam to attain certification as a Professional
Animal Scientist with the American Registry of Professional Animal
Scientists. In addition, she makes every effort to attend the Equine
Science Society Symposium that is held every other year. This
professional meeting is attended by most, if not all, of the top equine
researchers in the world, and highlights the current research that is
being done in the Equine industry.
Over the years, Kelly has done
consulting work in many of the midwestern states, but is now
representing Progressive Nutrition primarily in Nebraska, Iowa,
Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana and Northern Wyoming. Kelly has
combined her love of horses with her horse knowledge and now has rolled
that together will all of her experience in Equine Nutrition to assist
Progressive Nutrition clientele in attaining their goals, whatever they
may be.
